To get one you need to be either:
- Age 70 years or older
- Receive any of these benefits:
- Housing or Council Tax Benefit
- Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Child Tax Credit
- Working Tax Credit
- Industrial or War Disablement Pension
- Pension Credit
- Income Support

If you can’t get hold of free ones, consider your local supermarket which should have some decent low-cost ones. They normally cost around 99p each because they are subsidized by government.
If you want the same level of light you’re used to, the wattage of these compact fluorescent light bulbs is very important.
As a guide, to get the same amount of light as a 100 Watt bulb, you will need at least a 20W – 25W energy saving bulb.
