Saving Energy In The Workplace

Here are a few quick tips on ways your employer or your own business can save energy and cut carbon emissions:

  • Automatic lighting – turn on when you are in range using light sensors, turn off when no-one is around.
  • Fluorescent tube lighting and CFL bulbs - save up to 80% of the electricity consumption.
  • Recycle everything – the energy saved by recycling an aluminium can, instead of making the aluminium from scratch, is enough to power a TV for roughly 3 hours.
  • Turn off unused computer monitors – the computer ‘sleep’ state or standby function still uses power. Turning off at the mains is the best way.
  • Turn off everything from the mains plug/switch – when going home, almost everything in an office can be turned off. Printers, photocopiers, coffee machines, vending machines, projectors, computers, almost anything that is plugged into the mains can be unplugged! Everything except essential systems of course. There will be a noticeable benefit on the electricity bill and it will only take a couple of minutes at the start and end of each day.

Suggest these tips and anything else you can think of to your manager/employer. It is their Corporate Social Responsibility to do something about it!

They have a habit of saying they will look into it then forgetting it. So just remind them every so often, they will get it in the end.
